Somerset Hills Mountaineers - 2019 Outlook
by posted 01/23/2019

Dear Mountaineer Families,

On behalf of The Somerset Hills Mountaineers Youth Football Program Board of Directors,

I hope that you had a great holiday season with your family and friends,

and I wish all of you a healthy and happy new year!

Since the end of the football season, we have been hard at work to ensure that our program

strengthens the solid foundation we have built over the recent years - and strengthened it we have.

Going forward, through a new partnership with the Bernards Varsity High School Football Program,

our youth program has secured a bright future with new resources and significantly lower operating costs.

Specifically, our game, practice, storage, training, snack shack, and merchandising facilities will now be located at the high school.

Benefits to our program will include access to the following at no charge:

  • Turf and grass fields for practices & games.
  • Field lighting for practices & games.
  • The snack shack to provide essential food, beverage, and spirit-wear sales.
  • Football equipment.
  • Training rooms for film evaluation, weight training, and indoor practices.
  • Safety and sanitation resources such as bathrooms, ice machines, and first aid equipment.

Please join me in thanking Mike Hoppe (the high school athletic director), and Jon Simoneau

(The Bernards High School Varsity Football Head Coach), for their leadership and vision for this new partnership.

They saw our need to build one all-inclusive program from youth levels through high school with shared resources,

to ensure the future success of football in our community, and they delivered.

We will work closely with Mike, Jon, and their staff to integrate our programs, and your help will be essential.

With the cost burdens associated with using the polo fields (field fees and lights) now behind us,

we can now concentrate our efforts on playing more "offense" with regards to our program’s future.

The three main priorities going forward, with which we request your participation are:

Partnering with the high school for fundraising.

Marketing and safety education to ensure maximum registration.

Broader participation/membership within our board of directors to assist with fundraising, marketing, and safety.

Our next board meeting will occur during the week of February 10th.  Before then, we welcome all of you to submit your level of interest to participate in our program.

Whether it be a position in one of the three priorities listed above, a football or cheerleading head or assistant coaching position, or any position on our board, please email me your level of interest, and we will schedule a meeting with you.  Our goal is to have all 2019 board and coaching positions secured after our March board meeting (which will occur during the week of  March 4th ).

Reflecting on 2018, I would like to thank all of you for your participation and support last season.

It was a season full of many highs, some lows, but through it all, a season together as a football family.

We overcame the ongoing pessimism and concerns about our sport, with the joy of new players able to play football for the first time.

We overcame the disappointment of being unable to field tackle teams at our lower levels, with winning and championship seasons within their NFL Flag Leagues.

We experienced the elation and pride of one of our teams winning their first game in two years, and another reaching a championship game.

Again, through it all, we grew as a program, and as a football family.

We move forward to the 2019 season with a strong foundation, a renewed vigor, and a bright future.

On a personal note, this past season was my last as president of our program.

In 2019, my intention is to remain on the board until the summer, and assist with the leadership transition to a new president, the integration of our program with the high school,

and establish an easy and effective fund raising process.

As mentioned above, we welcome all interested persons to submit their candidacy for any board position they desire.

The two most senior level positions needed for 2019 will be president and vice president.

I have served as a coach for five years, a board member for four, and as president for three.

We have experienced challenges and triumphs together.  We fought for our program.

We fought for our kids.  We took a program, which was on solid footing, and built upon it.

Our program is now in the strongest position it has ever been in terms of finances, costs, and football resources.

We have set the stage for even stronger growth in the future thanks to our new partnership with the high school.

We will achieve this through your help and your leadership.  Please get involved.

Finally, I would like to thank many people in our community for helping me throughout my tenure as president.

Past and present board members and coaches.  Bernards High School Varsity Football Head Coach Jon Simoneau.  Mike Hoppe and Amy Malzone

of the Bernards High School Athletic Department.  Ed Caldwell for his tireless efforts regarding our equipment, field, and snack shack priorities.

Gene Carrigan and Bryon Garcia for sharing coaching best practices.  Jena McCredie for her laser-like focus with our finances.

Ray Liranzo for defending our interests with the NJSYFL.  Joe Rossi, for his selfless efforts for our program, and providing free meeting spaces for board meetings.  John Donahue and Lou Romano from the town council and recreation committee who fought, and continue to fight, to have town leaders recognize our importance.

Shawn and Kim Laverty for their guidance, support, and friendship.

Most of all, I want to thank my wife Danielle and my children for providing the love, patience, and support throughout all the trials and tribulations

that took me away from work, and most importantly, family.  It is now time for me to spend increased and well deserved time with them.

As Jaren L. Davis famously said, "If you want to make a difference and leave your world a better place, let others know how important they are

as you put their needs above yours."

I hope that I was able to do that for you, your families, and our program.

I wish all the best to you and your families for continued success in the future.

Our Program

The goal of the NJSYFL is to provide the largest number of pre-high school aged youth with a positive experience in the game of football. Our program has grown and garnered the reputation of being one of the best programs in the state in terms of both how it is run and the values set forth for the children that participate. The program focuses not only on athletic skill development but also on personal growth and enjoyment while it embodies the values of academic excellence, respect for others, discipline, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

We have a great responsibility to the boys and girls that participate in our program and the league has a "low tolerance" for any coach or individual that is part of this program and that does not strive to meet these responsibilities and places either the safety of the participants or the development of good values at risk.

The NJSYFL currently supports three types of programs for pre-high school aged boys and girls; contact football, cheerleading, and flag football. Additional details about each program can be found by clicking on the links below.
Full Contact Football
Full Contact Football
A competitive, traveling, full contact program for various age and weight groups.
A developmental, traveling program paired by age group with with the full contact football teams.
Flag Football
Flag Football
A developmental, town based, non-contact program primarily targeted for the younger age brackets.
